I was told not to store a DVD horizontal for too long (about 5 years).

  1. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, not sure on that one.

  2. Apart from audiophile recordings on DVD's / CD's and obviouosly old LP's, I wouldn't bother with what way the DVD's are stored.

If you are really intent on knowing, the recommended method for LP's used to be not more than 10 LP's stacked horizontally (higher numbers used to put pressure on the ones deep in the stack) Vertical storage was not recommended as they tended to warp over long durations of storage.

With DVD and CD, this problem is present but to a minimal extent. So it doesn't matter how you store them.

However for audiophile grade discs, I have been told that the best way is to store in a paper sleeves (that support the whole disc and not just the center as the conventional cases) and on a horizontal surface with stacks of not more than 25 discs.

This problem was addressed by Pioneer and infact they had a cd-player Elite PD-75 that held the cd upside down on a firm platter to avoid warping and vibrations while spinning. However since this is a very minor problem with CD and DVD's, most of the players (even high end) don't even think of it and play the discs really well.

So - store them as you wish, provided the area is dust free, 'extremes of temprature' free and moisture free. I store my discs vertically in their original cases.
