If you have a conversation with a spirit you will be the first.

talking to spirits is dangers since you do not know what their intentions are (if they are good or evil). Using tools to contact them can lead to bad things happening if contacting the wrong spirits. But in the end its up to you. I don't mean to scare you, but I'm just advising to be wise and leave that alone.

Look up EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon).  It works best with a digital recorder.  Any one can do this, any time.  I have gotten some of my best EVP at 3pm.  It can be more fun done with a group of friends.  Be respectful.  Say please and thank you.  You should get something.  There are a lot of spirits out there.   A person is in death, what they were in life.  So if the person was good, so then will be their ghost.  If a person was bad, the ghost will be bad.  I have talked to some spirits that are very good.  Nothing and no one will convince me any different.  And the nice thing about EVP is you go to the ghost.  You do not bring the ghost to you, like with a Ouija board.

I have never seen anything good come from the use of a Ouija Board or any other method simular so I would not suggest their use.

We all talk to spirit without even knowing we are doing it. In our mind there is usually alot of chatter going on. The voice that gives you a running commentary about anything and everything is the voice of your ego. This voice is the one that will tell you you cant do a certain thing as you would look stupid and it makes judgements about everything.

However sometimes when you are out on a long walk for example there is sometimes another voice, a gentle loving a wise voice that will talk incredible sense and answer your questions extremely wisely. This is also the voice of ingenius ideas and creativity.

This voice is either your higher self or your spirit guides.

Communicating with spirits to pass on messages to their loved ones (mediumship) happens in a very similar way, but we have to learn to quienten the voice of the ego to be able to do this.

There is nothing at all scary about mediumship it is extremely natural and there is nothing to fear as there are no evil spirits.

Mediumship is an ability that needs to be developed over time, hopefully with the help of a good teacher.

If you believe in spirits talk to them any way you choose because the outcome will be the same.

Sitting under a shady tree, with a glass of cool white wine while the golden dappled shadows dance around you..... that could be the place to start your hesitant conversation with the elusive ephemeral spirits.
