A lady at my church asked me to teach her English (I speak a good amount of Spanish). What is the best method to do this? Any books or websites or other tools that you suggest would be appreciated.

  1. I don't know the best way to teach English but one way to start is with very simple children's books.  The illustrations help explain the meaning of the words.

You might also visit Longman.com. Or is it Pearson.com?

  2. idk? so generus...

  3. the best way to learn any kind of language is to be around it .. or you can just go with Rosetta Stone ..

  4. Start off with phrases like, "My name is ______" And vocabulary. Also teach her how to conjugate verbs into the present tense. And then teach her how to string the words together in the correct order to form sentences. In other words, tell her where the verb usually goes in relation to the subject. Also tell her where adjectives go.

Teach her important verbs like, "to go," "to be," "to want," "to like," "to eat," "to drink," "to see."

Since she speaks Spanish it should be a little easier because there are many English words that are cognants and English isn't spoken very fast.

It would be great if you had some sort of English-learner textbook to help.

Rosetta Stone is an excellent application, but it costs some dinero, so I'm not sure about that.

  5. Honestly, I'd say get a CEV Bible (good for ESL...easy English) or New Living Translation (another easy-English Bible), and put it next to a Spanish Bible.  You can then teach her how to read from the English one, while comparing the meaning to the Spanish one.  But just go a few sentences at a time.
