  1. Depends on whether you plan at least 2 months ahead, your budget, etc.:

    1) Rent a car - if money is not really an issue

Pros: You can make your own schedule, not depend on anything or anyone, if there is more of you traveling, you can easily share the costs for the rent and the gas

Cons: More expensive, you need to consider different speed limits in the individual countries, police, etc.

    2) Air travel - if you plan at least two months ahead

Pros: With the low cost carriers, the tickets can be really cheap, you can check them out e.g. on www.skyscanner.com. Flying makes the travel more comfortable and faster

Cons: You really have to plan well, including which cities to visit in which order to optimize the air travel connections.

    3) Trains - good railway network throughout Europe, flexible

Pros: You can decide to get on a train and travel from one day to another and even choose one city/country over another as the connections are good. You do not need to concentrate on driving, the travel is quite comfortable and smooth.

Cons: Not as fast as air travel

    4) Touring company

I have never used one, but have read some good reference on Contiki.com. There is some information you can check out on this type of travel at http://atlastravelweb.com.

    Hope this helps.

  2. The best is by train as the distances are not so far and there are some high speed trains. Airports use to be outside city centres and there's also the check-in/out that takes a lot time.

Here's an example for a rail website you can check:

    http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en...

  3. Car or train, maybe a plane. On foot is another option but quite slow.

  4. Sorry, never been there, but check on Internet; I'm sure You can find a lot of info...!!

  5. Travel within a country or travel between European countries?

Within a country then train is normally the best option (but remember that Europe is quite a big place and many different countries so it is hard to generalise)

To remote places then by car is sometimes the only practical option, but if you want to visit the normal tourist based cities then train in between plus buses/trams within the city are usually the easiest manner (using a car in a big city is most of the time due to the price & lack of parking)

If you mean travel between then there are quite a number of low cost airlines, and if you book in advance you can get really cheap fares.  The two most famous for these routes in Europe are http://www.ryanair.com & http://www.easyjet.com/

  6. Other things to be said in fovour of using trains are:

    1. Often, the railroad is better for having a look at the landscape, because you can look out all the time if you want to, instead of looking at dull roads (if there's a restaurant on the train you often have a really good view). Also, the railroads often have a more interesting stretch than the roads (in the river valleys, through the cities etc)

    2. When you want to make a longer move, you can use a night train. That way you can save the money for a night in a hotel or hostel, and you can sometimes sleep through a less interesting part of your journey.

    3. The raiway stations are nearly always dead centre in the bigger cities, and thus they are a very convinient starting point for exploration. Often, they are directly linked to the metro/tram/bus system of the city, too...

    I LIKE trains....

  7. TRAIN!! its wonderful if you want to see the scenery, going from 1 country to another you can really tell the difference once you cross the border!! if you dont want to see the scenery choose plane =)

  8. train, hot air balloon, car...walk a lot. best way to travel is to make sure you stop and see everything you want to before it is too late. while you are there do all that you can because the chance might not come around!

  9. There's no one best way - it depends on where you are going and whether speed or cost or comfort are your priorities, and whether you want to see scenery along the way.

Trains are often the most pleasant, you can see the scenery, and they are a good way to travel a compact itinerary like France-Switzerland-Italy, but can be more expensive than flights, and can be too slow if you want to include places like Russia, Norway/Sweden, Spain/Portugal, or Greece when you don't have the time or interest to spend days going all the way there and back.

Buses are often much cheaper than planes or trains but can be uncomfortable.

Planes can be cheap, and can save a lot of time, but going to and from airports far outside of city centers can be a hassle, and airline routes reach far fewer places than bus or train routes.  If you just want to see 2-4 major cities and that's it, flying between them on Ryanair, Easyjet, Air Berlin, etc. is often the best option.

Renting a car is usually a bad idea since the cost of both car rental and gasoline is very high in most of Europe, and since traffic and parking are a nightmare in most major cities, but car rental can be a good way to explore some rural areas that are not well-served by public transportation.

Ferries are usually extremely slow, uncomfortable, and fairly expensive, but some people like them as a way of getting from Italy to Greece or getting to see many Greek Islands, including smaller, less touristed islands that don't have their own airports.
