Question:

What's the best way to trim, fertilize, and care for a 5 yr. old Weeping Willow tree ?

The trunk is about 6" in diameter and the tree itself seems to be doing well, but the long branches seem to be growing exponentially faster than the height of the tree .

Any help would be greatly appreciated . Thank you .

  1. You cannot hurt this tree at all... it does not require fertilizer really..You can take a willow tree and cut a limb off of it , stick it in the ground and it will grow..Keep in mind a willow tree is going to put out roots 50 feet or more in all directions..You can take trimmed branches, and cut them off anyway you want to train them..this will not hurt this tree at all...You can boil the stems down too and use a good fertilizer/root harmone to water your other plants/veggies with... I do this it is called "willow water"..here is a link..do not plant a cutting from this tree next to a house, close to a sidewalk/driveway..or near your drain lines for sewage..This tree is very medicinal..it is where aspirin comes from..

  2. This is natural for a willow. You can prune back the longer limbs if you like, but it's not really needed.

If a willow is planted where it gets plenty of sun and water, very little else is needed for it, as they are a very  hardy tree.
