What's the best way to word a letter of resignation?

I'm resigning from my job and don't know how to word it, namely how to begin the letter where I drop the bomb that I'm leaving (it's very unexpected, I think). Any advice?

  1. Never burn bridges, but don't be dishonest either.  What will you miss about where you work?  Begin, "I've enjoyed the many relationships I've made..." or "The learning experiences have been excellent" and then explain the benefit you'll receive in your new role..."I've accepted a new position at another company that I feel will provide....."

End by thanking your employer for the time and committing to remaining focused on excellent performance for the remainder of your notice (two weeks, or whatever).

  2. this website has different templates, depending upon the circumstances in which you are leaving.

  3. If you're leaving on bad terms, the letter can be very short, something like:

    Dear xxxx,

This letter is to inform you that I am resigning my position with your company as of Friday, 28 September 2008.

    Thank you.

                                                           Sincerely,

                                                           your signature

If you're leaving on decent terms, make it a bit longer, explaining that while you enjoyed working for the company, you've unexpectedly been offered a position at a new firm that will enable you to continuing growing in your field, and that you wish all of the best to your old boss and teammates.
