Question:

What's the big deal with women buying uber-expensive name brand purses?

Or if they can't afford the name brands, they'll buy the fake. I'm talking about super-expensive brands such as louis vuitton, coach, gucci, dooney & burke, etc. Is the quality reeeeaaaly that amazing? Do they last for decades? Does the buyer feel better (about themselves) when their purse has an expensive brand logo? Am I missing something???

  1. Well, Louis Vuitton & Gucci clothes are extremely expensive, much moreso than their handbags or shoes. Women buy their cheaper merchandise, because they feel that they'll be able to buy into the Louis Vuitton or Gucci lifestyle if they carry around a logo. High fashion is very much about exclusivity, and handbags are a way for fashion brands to market heavily to consumers, and to give them a "taste" of the lifestyle/image they project.

I personally am not into logos/brand names, but I always choose quality over quantity. I'd rather have 1 well made handbag than 10 cheap ones that will fall apart. None of my bags have any logos on them, but they're all made of leather & are well designed and well made.

  2. Missing something?  No, I'd say you are the one who HAS something called SENSE.

It's all about ego with some people.  They think they can buy self-worth.

  3. People want to look rich. Usually, its the ones who have not figured out that rich people don't get rich by spending money on things that won't increase in value.

  4. ITS ALL THAT M'TV! PEOPLE JUST WANT TO BE SOMETHING THEIR NOT. PEOPLE CANT FIND THEM SELF'S SO THEY FIND IT IN OTHER PEOPLE OR ICONS LIKE J'LO  OR WHAT EVER SINGER THEY LIKE. ITS ALL MATERIALISTIC ****!

  5. It's a status symbol.  It's only value is that you can't afford it.

  6. It is silly, unless you really can afford them. Why go into debt for a handbag?

My crazy son has bought a few Louis Vuitton bags for his ex-girlfriends.

The really insane part is he usually buys them as a parting gift when he breaks up with them.I quess he wants them to still like him.

I have some D&B bags from over 20 plus years ago, they do last forever.

I stopped buying them a few years ago when the styles got very silly with hearts etc. on them. I used to like them because they were classic designs and I hate to shop, buy a good one and not worry about it for a few years.

Lately, I have been going to TJMaxx and such stores and buying whatever. Of course I usually got the bags for a birthday or X-Mas present or bought them myself.

I am also 53 years old now and have really  only my husband and myself to worry about. If I don't get what I like now, when will I.

  7. I wish I knew the answer. My wife has a stash of brand name new bags in the closet. She still only uses one of two of them. The other 15 sit in MY closet. It's still in boxes, on my side of the closet. Women.

  8. I bought a cheap $12 purse that is slung over your shoulder...

It's an indication of status...but I never really understood the women who buy those extremely giant purses. What do they put in there?!

  9. Honestly, it depends on the person and their motive for having one.

Some women want them for the status.  Some because they like the designs/styles and fun of it (why they don't mind buying knock-offs).  Some women have them because some manufacturers make limited editions and want to be a part of that.

Other women buy them because they were "trained" that way (to shop that way) by their mothers, big sisters, aunts and grandmothers and don't know any differently (and cannot explain why they want to buy it but they know they "should"??  No logic).

Lastly, others buy them because they appreciate and can tell the difference between the quality of the craftsmanship of them (why they cost a ton) and another handbag.  It may sound stupid but I'm a trained designer (as are many of my friends and colleagues) and many things actually warrant WHY the price tag is what it is (imported, hard to get materials to make it and labor on some - stitching, etc.).  But believe me, many of those bags do not at all!!

As I learn getting older - there are many things people rationalize spending money on....some we can understand and others we cannot.  We are no different to them.  So who cares?! :) haha.

For me - I'd rather have a $100 handbag w/$2000 in it than a $2,000 handbag and no money to put in it. :) hee hee.  But that's just me.  People don't think the same.....if we did, life would be boring and full of "robots". :)
