What's the biggest change needed in public education (primary, 2nd, higher)? And how would you go about it?

  1. Public education is very good at dealing with normal kids, above normal kids and below normal kids, but terrible at dealing with kids who are above normal in some areas, normal in some areas, and below normal in others.  There is not quick fix for this.

    The other main problem is No Child Left Behind, which has turned the school year into a nine-month cram session.  I know several long-time teachers who have left the profession because they are no longer permitted to teach--it's all about the test scores, nothing else.

    As far as postsecondary, get rid of "publish or perish", and you won't have so many college classes taught by non-English-speaking grad students (who do that for shamefully low wages because it's the only job they're allowed to have on their student visas).
