  1. When I was younger, I did the same as Gerry. I had an old car and went with Wawanesa as it was cheapest. But I think you will not be able to apply because you are not a Canadian resident.

Your car is licensed from the USA, and so you should find out from your local insurance companies if any will insure you for the duration of your stay in Montreal.

But in case you want to try and ask, here are a few car insurance companies here in Montreal you can contact to see if they will provide insurance for your car. They will need to know make, model, year before they can give you a quote.

  2. When I was a student in Montreal, I insured my car with Wawanesa, located on Decarie Blvd. Where other companies considered me a higher risk because of my age, Wawanesa insured me because they had six-month policies. That means they wouldn't have to wait so long to jack up your rates if you made a claim. :-)

Wawanesa also doesn't use brokers, so the agents are in their offices and they don't have to pay 3rd party commissions. This also keeps their rates lower. Google their name and call for a quote.

  3. Note that Quebec has no-fault publicly funded insurance for bodily injury. Seriously consider getting a Quebec license for your car and you'll then only need liability insurance from a private insurance company for property damage.

The first link is to Quebec's licensing bureau where you'll get info on the cost and process to license the car here.

The second link is a site that let's you compare quotes from all major insurers in Canada. Rates vary wildly in this market as insurers choose to target certain markets more than others to get an edge. This tool is particularly useful to avoid hours on the phone getting multiple quotes.

Lastly, check with your (Montreal) university's student union who very well may have a deal with an insurance company that is particularly competitive for students with special volume discount negotiated directly with the student union.

  4. Most companies will cover the United States and Canada, I find it odd that yours does not.  In order to find the lowest insurance offered go to  a good website

I've bookmarked this site to go back to...

    All the best to you.

  5. Have you checked this website yet?

I don't know much about car insurance as I've never had a car - sorry buddy!

    Hope this will help!
