What's the cheapest return rail fare to Durham? There seem to be so many types and I'm on a tight budget.

If you get a saver return its will cost about 95 pounds return.

But if you can be rigid to a certain time and certain train you can get advance purchase tickets which can cost as little as 20 pounds each way

I agree that no sensible answer can be given until you let us know when you want to travel and from where. In addition to London services  from King's Cross, referred to in other answers, Durham is served by Cross Country from many places, by Northern Rail and by TransPennine from Manchester/Liverpool. So you really need to be much more precise if you want some help.

National Express stop at Durham. The bus is about 50% cheaper than the train although it takes a bit longer. You don`t give your start point, but you can check out the service by logging onto http://www.nationalexpress.com and following the links.

Re above answer the coach from London to Durham takes 7 hours 15 minutes and the train which is far more frequent takes 2 hours 50 minutes, so I suggest you take the train. They depart from Kings Cross Station in London and are operated by National Express East Coast Trains. www.nationalexpresseastcoast.co.uk. The fare will depend on how far you are able to book in advance and you can do this via their website or at Kings Cross Station. For the cheapest fares avoid Fridays and book as far in advance as possible
