I'm a solo bagpacker from Asia, I don't know if I have to buy the Eurail National Pass or I can get a better train that is cheaper. Or you can tell me how many kinds of train/rail I can get in Italy, and how do I buy the tiket, When I arrive in Italy? Or buy online in Asia? Where to buy if I buy it in Italy? How much it cost for each trip that I mention above? I need as much info as I can. Thanks for helping me....(",)

  1. Check this site:

I am sure you will get all of your answers. We too are visiting Italy this April.Trying to gsather a lot of information. Hope I can help you.

There are several types of train you may have to avail in your journey. The fastestes(and obviusly the most costly)is the Euroster. On the other hand there are

these trains which generally have lots of stops but the tickets are cheaper:

    R - Regional

    IR - InterRegional

    IC - Intercity

    D - Directo

E - Express (shorter than D but longer than ES) So far I 've gatheres my information, while an Ic train takes 6 hrs.to cover the distance from Venice to Rome Euroster covers it in 4.5 hrs.But you will get a better knowledge if you use the site.My personal suggestion is igf you have enough time in hand 7 are in a budget go for the Ic option and spend the money in enjoying good Italian food. But if you have a short time or want to avoid a long day journey go for the Euroster. As far my knowledge goes for the fast trains you need a reservation. You make the reservation at the same time that you buy the ticket. If you are traveling on a weekend I would recommend making reservations and buying a ticket online or buying from the machines earlier in the week. The cost is the same either way. But in this way you can avoid the rush and will not miss the train . The official website (that I have mentioned above : www.trenitalia.com ) has a page in English if you click in the top right corner. One of the most important things to know is the name of the stations (i.e. Roma termini to Firenze S.M.N. (Rome to Florence)) as there could be more than one station for bigger cities. The ticket machines are easy to useThey give you every option for travel on every type of train they have running. If you want a cheaper fare there are slow trains (about 3hrs between Florence and Rome). For smaller stations these are sometimes your only opt. You do not need a reservation for these but if you opt for this fare get there early enough to grab a seat, otherwise you could end up standing. Just remember to stamp it in the yellow machine before you board. You will see them as you are walking to the train. Unless you have to pay the whole fine.

    Bon voyage.
