What's the closest/best beach to South Coast Plaza?

My friends and I are planning a day trip to South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa this upcoming weekend and we would like to know which beach is nice that is closest to South Coast Plaza? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hmm, if you take the 55S, which is near South Coast, all the way to the end where it becomes Newport Blvd and just keep going, you will hit the Balboa Island area where you can see lots of beach and cute shops and restaurants too.  It's a pretty fancy area.
