What's the correct way to breathe when swimming in freestyle?

I get chocked when I tried to breath on side. How to overcome this problem?

  2. I used to have trouble with breathing freestyle too, basically I felt like ended up swallowing more water than actually inhaling, but it helped when my coach told me to keep the top of my head in the water when I turn to the side.

    It's instinctual to want to pick up the whole head from the water, but this actually doesn't give the mouth enough room for a good inhale. By keeping the top of the head down, not only does your body exert less effort to keep yourself afloat, the position actually puts the mouth higher than the surface of water. It also keeps the body more streamlined.

  3. this isnt something people usually have problems with but you're supposed to breathe when your arm is most bent and your hand should be align with your head
