VERY long complicated story but a in-law of mine got there kids taken and we are doing (trying to do) foster care. Department of Children and Family Services has mentioned that there is a small cost involved and that we would likely be refunded. But I was told that there is a larger cost involved and it is not refunded?! This was by some one that doesn't work for DCFS but works closely with cases from them. If anyone has any ideas, or have experience please fill me in. B/C I'm lost!!!!!!

  1. First of all are you trying to do a foster-to-adopt program? I think that is what I am gathering from your situation.

In foster-to-adopt programs, children who are available for adoption have been removed from their birth parents’ care due to abuse or neglect. Though some infants are found in foster-to-adopt programs, most of the children in these programs are older. Not all children in foster care are legally free for adoption—depending on the program, there may be some risk when adoptive parents accept a placement. Foster-to-adopt programs are run by government or government-contracted agencies and are free or involve only nominal fees.

If this is the case this is a domestic adoption. I havev attached a site with all of the costs and fees of domestic adoption that you may want to review for yourself since you have a clearer understanding of the situation than I do.

    This is the site:

  2. It depends on the policies of your state.  I work with DCBS in Kentucky.  They have what's called kinship care, where relatives can be paid for taking care of kids.  I think most states have something like that because the federal government encourages relative placement.  Whoever is the child's social worker could quickly answer that question for you.

  3. depends on your state, we are adopting 4 kids from foster care. it will cost us 2,000 and we get 1,600 back once the adoption is final.
