What's the deal with having to turn off your lights from 8-9 tonite?

Today at school one of my friends told me that from 8-9 tonite that all the lights in my house had to be turned off for this energy saving thing?! So if you know anything about it... HELP!! I'm really confussed!!

depending on where you live, you have a certain time where you should turn off all the lights to save electricity.
