Ok so here's the low down, I JUST cleaned my tank (55 gl, fresh water with 4 fish, all cichlids) last weekend (not this past one, but the one before) And I can go literally 2 weeks before it even BEGINS to look like it needs a cleaning, and lately it's just been outta control!!! There's this clear-like film across the bottom that has happened now for the SECOND time. Yes I've changed the filters, the pH levels are normal (well probably not now with how bad it looks), the filter tube thingy is clear. Their diet hasn't changed. The only thing that I noticed last time I cleaned the tank, was when I took out the lig decoration to rinse it off, there were what I thought eggs on the inside, and I checked it the other day again, and they are now gone. (I think the female ate them since I took it outta the water without knowing the eggs were there.) Anyways, my theory is that one of the males fertization or whatever is causing the clear-like film. It's thick looking. It has captured a few air bubbles from the airator thingy. The walls of the tank are fine looking... no algae or whatever.

Any ideas people???

Thanks!

  1. If its a small area then yes its a male milt film on the bottom and they're just going by instinct. Now if its a bacteria you'll see a very faint layer of ammonia floating on top of the film and this is caused by a im-ballence in the tank. There is no balance from nitrates to nitrites or vis versa. I would consider getting some fresh water muscles and see how it looks then. good luck..

  2. i dont know what you ment by a little film across the bottom.Something happened to my fish tank reacently it got cloudy on the bottom. So i asked my science teacher and i said i just cleaned it like 1 day ago and it got cloudy and she said did you clean the gravel? And then i remembered that i didnt.SO did you clean the rocks, decoration, and plants?
