Question:

What's the deal with this Large Hadron Collider? It's due to go live in a few days, but what's it going to do?

I know most of what I read in the media is incorrect because it's their job to terrify and misinform the people, but I think they should look into this more because right now it just looks like theories on top of theories with nothing really proved. Why haven't we heard from the top physicists from around the world to vouch for this potential doomsday device. I know the discoveries it could make are very exciting, but I want to know more before they begin testing. Is it just me?

  1. "Potential Doomsday Device" -- sounds like you've already got your mind made up . . .

Why don't you listen to your first though: "I know most of what I read in the media is incorrect . . ."

Frankly, good science makes bad news.  Day-to-day science is unexciting and boring.  So Yes, the media DOES try to make things more sensational.

Simply put, the new collider is going to make two atomic particle hit each other with a force that has never been possible before.  The hope to find evidence of "The God Particle".  This "particle" is what they claim "holds everything together".

In effect, it would be like finding proof of gravitons -- the particle that "carry" gravity.  Scientists have theorized that they exist, but no one has ever seen one.

    Same with "God PArticles".

Some people have claimed that the collider could make a "black hole" that would "swallow the earth", but there are SOOOO many problems with that  Simply put, any black hole that might be made would be the size of an atom, and would be too small to do any damage. And it would "die" almost as soon as it was formed.

So, simply answered -- yeah , it is just you.  You choose to believe all the "bad press" even though you know it's "bad" press.

And if I'm wrong, we'll all get sucked in together anyway, so what's it matter????

  2. "Why haven't we heard from the top physicists from around the world"

We have.  There is NOTHING to worry about.  The physicists haven't posted any lengthy articles because the whole concept that the LHC is a danger is too silly to be worth their time.  So they just tell us there's nothing to worry about.

The LHC isn't going to do anything that doesn't happen naturally every second of every day as cosmic rays bombard the earth.  You've had one or two of them pass through you in the time it took to read this.  If there was ANY sort of 'doomsday' danger it would have already happened a billion years ago.  The only difference is the LHC is going to make these interactions happen in front of some very sensitive equipment rather than randomly around the world.
