  1. Freezing rain contains supercooled water drops which freeze on impact with the ground or other objects to form glazed frost.

Sleet is precipitation of snow and rain(or drizzle)together,or snow melting as it falls.

  2. Very simply put by the National Weather Service

    Freezing Rain or Drizzle

This occurs when rain or drizzle freezes on surfaces (such as the ground, trees, power lines, motor vehicles, streets, highways, etc.) that have a temperature of 32°F or below.

    Sleet (PL)

Describes solid grains of ice formed by the freezing of raindrops or the refreezing of largely melted snowflakes. These grains usually bounce upon impact with the ground or pavement. Heavy sleet is a relatively rare event defined as an accumulation of ice pellets covering the ground to a depth of 1/2" or more.

  3. Freezing rain reaches the surface as rain, then freezes on contact with surfaces that are at or below freezing.  Sleet refreezes just before it reaches the surface, and reaches the ground as pellets of ice.
