  1. V Brake is Shimano's name for their linear pull breaks. They are the same thing.

There are other brakes depending on application type. What type of bike your talking about?

  2. others..

cantilever, disc, drum, side pull. center pull <linear pull>

  3. the others have already covered that V and linear are the same thing.  Sometimes folks call them side pull.  Other options are

    Disc (both hydraulic and cable)

Cantilever or center pull (like older MTB or cyclocross)

U brake (like road bikes or older bmx)

Roller cam (old version of cantilever)

    drum (much older)

    fixie (no brakes)

    crashing

  4. As was already said, V-brake and "linear" brakes are the same...as are direct pull brakes.

V-brake is Shimano's terminology for linear or direct pull style brakes.

Cantilever brakes are another style which use one cable connected to the brake hand lever on one end and attached to another cable on the other end. The other cable connects one side of the brake arm to the other side. The whole set-up has the appearance of an inverted Y.

Having had experience with both styles (cantilever and linear/direct pull), I greatly prefer the linear/direct set-up.

  5. a V-brake is just pads which attempt to stiick to the rim of the wheel on the bike, i dunno what a linear pull brake is.

the best choice for brakes is a disc brake.
