What's the difference b/w a A/V composite vs. component cable?

I am trying to hook up my iPod to my TV and don't know what the difference is b/w the two types of A/V cables.

  1. Composite is the entire video signal on the yellow wire, left audio is white and right audio is red.

    Component splits the color across one red, one blue and one green wire. You must still have a red right audio and a white left audio (5 wires total)

    Component is the only one of the two that will allow HD quality pictures so use that if your TV is able.
