  1. Its those Brits trying to change our language.  like with colour and behaviour and organise.  And yes, it is the Brits changing the language.  There was a conscious effort to change English, a Germanic language, to more closely resemble romance languages like French.  That is the reason for the differences, we, Americans, spell and speak more like Shakespeare would have than do modern Brits.
