What's the difference between CSUs and UCs?

Apparently if I want to go to a UC I need a third year of lab science, but if I go to a CSU it doesn't matter. What are the differences between the two? Is either of them better than the other?

  1. Yes, although it varies by purpose.  The UCs are the state's research universities.  They are better-funded and the state tries to maintain them as premier universities, competitive with the best across the country.  They hire the best faculty and pull in big donations from private sources as well, so their facilities (such as labs) are also better.  They offer a wide range of graduate (both masters and Ph.D.) degrees along with the undergraduate degrees.

The CSUs were designed to teach the masses of undergraduate students.  Originally they didn't offer graduate degrees at all; now that they do, they are mostly masters degrees (the only doctorates offered are Ed.D.s, which are new for them and somewhat controversial.  They, unfortunately, often are the ones to suffer most when the economy is bad, because they rely more on state funding and get the brunt of budget cuts when things are cut.

Generally, if you are looking toward graduate or professional study, the UCs are a better bet, even as an undergraduate, because of the facilities and more prestigious faculty.  The CSUs might be better if you were getting a teaching credential or an undergraduate business degree (unless you want to go on for a prestigious MBA), or something along those lines.  The teaching is actually more of a focus at the CSUs, so students tend to be more satisfied (that may also be because CSU students often have fewer options), but during economic downturns there are sometimes issues with overcrowded classes and students being unable to get classes they need, so that it takes them 5 or 6 years (or more) to graduate.
