What's the difference between Domain Bacteria and Domain Archaea?

  1. There are a number of differences:

    - they have a different cell wall structure - bacteria have peptidoglycan, and archaea do not.

    - archaea have a "eukaryotic-type" (80S) ribosome structure, while bacteria have a 70S ribosome.

    - archaea have ether lipids in their cell membranes, instead of ester lipids (which bacteria and eukaryotes use)

    - archaebacterial flagellae are distinct from bacterial flagellae (archaebacterial flagellae evolved from type IV pili, while bacterial flagellae evolved from type III secretases)

    - the subunit structure of RNA polymerase in archaea is different from bacteria.
