  1. Seb87 is completely correct

Salsa S is completely incorrect in stating that Northern Ireland is a province (I'd love to know where the h**l people get this from?!?)

The Northern Ireland is a constituent COUNTRY of the UK

The Province is called Ulster which consists of 9 counties:

Only 6 of these counties are in Northern Ireland - 3 of them are in the Republic of Ireland

Therefore Northern Ireland and the province of Ulster are two different things.

  2. England = England.

(Great) Britain = England, Scotland and Wales.

United Kingdom = Britain plus Northern Ireland.

    Simple.

  3. To make it clear I'll explain from the start, using the most common misconception that England=the UK.

England is one of 6 constituent countries within the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom has one government which has control over all of those 6 countries.

Each country has a varying level of devolution allowing them to veto some acts of the UK government... the Two exceptions being Cornwall and England who don't posess any devolved powers. (Cornwall is debatable seeing as it's Stannary Parliament is officialy still allowed the right to veto but the UK government don't recognise it).

The 6 Countries from North to South are....

    Scotland

    Isle of Man

    N.Ireland

    England

    Wales

    Cornwall

    Definitions::

Great Britain. The collective name for every country within the UK except for Northern Ireland.

Britain. The geographical name for the collection of Islands ranging from the Scottish Isles in the North to the Isles of Scilly in the South.

United Kingdom. The Political name for the constituent countries within the British Isles. Signified by the Act of union (The act which brought together the seperate nations as one Umbrella nation comprising of smaller constituent nations)

England. One of 6 countries within the British Isles and The United Kingdom.

  4. england is a country. but isnt really called that, it is just because before the uk and gb were made, they were a country. this is the main one which has most population and is the biggest and has the parliament.

great britian is made up of england, scotland, wales and northern ireland. these are the different 'countries' as i said before.

united kingdom is great britain but including the republic of ireland as northern ireland is controlled by the parliament in england but the roi has its own. roi also use the euro. some people in roi speak irish and not english. and this people in wales mainly speak welsh but most people also speak english.

DO NOT MISTAKE ENGLAND AS ANY OF THE OTHER EG WHEN YOU SAY SCOTLAND IS IN ENGLAND! IT IS NOT AND I GET REALLY ANNOYED AT OTHER PEOPLE THINKING SCOTLAND IS IN ENGLAND. THIS IS PROBABLY THE SAME FOR WALES AND NORTHERN IRELAND.

  5. The definitions of what constitutes the UK and Great Briain has been adequately stated . Despite Sebby's paranoia - it is  a sad factor that many people refer to Britain /Uk as " England " and it is usually non English people who are the perpitrators of this anomaly ! Nuff said .

  6. England is one of the countries that make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (to give it the full title).

Great Britain is made up of Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland (Southern Ireland, also known as Eire, is a republic and therefore completely independent of the rest of the UK).

There's no rule as to why people refer to it as Great Britain or the UK but in international sporting events, the team is officially referred to as Great Britain, short for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - a bit of a mouthful!

  7. Great Britain is the term used for the island containing the contiguous nations¹ of England, Scotland and Wales.

England, Scotland and Wales together with the province of Northern Ireland, form the country officially known as "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" or simply the United Kingdom.

The term "England" is sometimes erroneously used by both natives of England (the English) and those outside our country to refer to the United Kingdom

  8. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all constituent countries which together make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, a sovereign nation state.

Great Britain is the largest island of the British Isles, and consists of the mainland parts of England, Scotland, and Wales.

  9. i seriously dont think there is one

  10. there is only a couple of people who got it right, which is quite shocking considering alot of people in the UK don't seem to know, there is a difference between all 3

spanner and horse, The UK and GB are not the same thing. You even said it yourself, the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland. So GB and the UK cant be the same thing. It clearly states it in the name

Great Britain is the Island containing, England, Scotland and Wales.

The United Kingdom is the Sovereign nation made up of the 4 constituent countries of England, Scotland and Wales (aka Great Britain) and Northern Ireland

And Salsa S, i don't think any English person refers to the UK as England, your just another Paranoid Scot or Welsh who has some sort of complex about England. We are not as bad as you lot make us out to be
