For school, I'm getting a laptop to take notes on. I'm only in high school, so I'm not getting something huge, just something I can take notes on and such.

Well, we found a pretty cheap one. It's a

Everex 7" CloudBook CE1200V Ultra-Portable Laptop. It says it's linux based.

What I want to know is this:

a. What is the difference between Linux and Windows? and

b. Can I install things such as Power Point and iTunes on it?

Thank-you!

Hayley.

  1. Linux is not a cheap rip off it is an Operating System for powerusers

Don't compare it with MS-DOS MS-DOS does not even come close in terms of power

For you the asker i think you should choose Windows unless you are willing to learn how to use LINUX because the learning curve is rather steep although once you get the hang of it you will forget Windows once and for all

  2. Well Hayley, Linux Is A Cheap Ripoff Of Windows Somone Tried To Make An Operating System And Released It Early Get Windows Xp On A Compaq Or Get WIndows Vista And Load Xp On WHat You Decide To Get Because Vista IS Way To Buggy

  3. Windows is a proprietary operating system developed by Microsoft to run on personal computers.  It has been changed over the years to take advantage of new developments in computer hardware.  It's popularity is based on it's ease of use, and the amount of software that  is written to run on it, but it can be a bit pricey.  Because of it's popularity it is the main target for those who write viruses and other malicious software.

Linux can be described as a UNIX like operating system.  Unlike Windows, Linux is free, as is much of the software that can run on Linux.  With the addition of an application called Wine, you can use Linux to run software designed for Windows.  With Open Office, a free computer office suite, you can do just about anything you can do with Microsoft Office, including save in Microsoft Office format, so you can share your work with those using Microsoft Office.

As stated earlier, you can use Open Office which can save files as Word documents, Xcel spreadsheets, and Power Point presentations, and can get free software that is compatible with i tunes.

Linux can take a little while to learn, but once you do, you may not want to use anything else.

  4. 1. linux is free

    2. most linux software is free

    3. linux is a lot less susceptible to malware than windows

    4. you can install an equivalent to i-tunes on it

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t...

    5. you can install powerpoint and ms office through WINE, but most people opt to use http://www.openoffice.org because its free and comes with most linux distributions

    for information on powerpoint see

    http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.ph...

    6. linux can be more difficult to use than windows, depending on what you want to do with it. if all you are doing is surfing the net, taking notes and doing assignments then its fine. for gaming, options are limited, and for some other tasks it can be a bit complicated, but if you just want to use the software thats on it and maybe add one or 2 things then its not too bad.

    7. if you dont like linux, its a fairly simple matter to install xp on the cloudbook.

    [pimp~, above]

actually its not a "cheap rip off of windows", initially linux was a command line program similar to msdos. it has a totally different underlying structure from any mswindows product, and is more similar to unix than to a microsoft operating system.
