What's the difference between a Canon EOS Rebel XT and a Canon 20D?

I'm interested in starting up a wedding photography business and I already own the Rebel XT. Is it worth it to buy a 20D?

The 20D has a heftier body, ISO goes to 3200, has more features, better ergonomics, top LCD panel, more WB options. And it's old.

However, if you're looking to start a business why not put your money into something that handles a bit more than an older semi-pro camera?

If you're serious, have a look at the Nikon D3. Yes, it's an expensive camera, but if you're starting a business you might want to make an investment. It and some nice glass should set you up for some freelance work.

You'll definitely want to replace your XT if you're thinking about having a business. While the XT is a great beginner's camera it simply won't stand up to the task of intense wedding photography. Also, with more expensive cameras the controls are much better laid out so it's easier to quickly change settings - an important feature to get the right shot of the "you may now kiss the bride" moment.

If you're making a business out of this I would suggest at least the 40D. The 20D is a great camera but it's a little aged for a professional business. A big advantage of the 40D is that the shutter is a lot quieter. When you're taking pictures of the ceremony I'm sure they'd appreciate less noise.

Talk to other wedding photographers and see what they are using.  The 20D is rather old technology.  Since it was introduced, it has been replaced by the Canon 30D, 40D and now 50D.

What cameras did you use when you were learning the business working for a wedding photographer?  I would look at your budget and see if buying a second camera right now is a good investment.

The 20D is over 4 years old ... most pros plan on replacing their every 18 to 24 months and budget accordingly.  Under that criteria, you would have replaced the 20D two years ago.
