What's the difference between a cake and a pie?

Question

Most cakes have frosting, I know, but what about cheesecakes? Why aren't they called cheesepies?

cake:

A sweet baked food made of flour, liquid, eggs, and other ingredients, such as raising agents and flavorings. Usually contains frosting, decorations.

pie:

A baked food composed of a pastry shell filled with fruit, meat, cheese, or other ingredients, and usually covered with a pastry crust.

In a cake, sans the icing the entire product is more or less homogeneous. In a pie, there is a separation between the filling and what holds it. Generally speaking, in a pie there is little or no flour used in the filling, and the crust is used mostly to simply hold the product in one place and make it easier to bake and serve.

I suppose a pie is made with pastry, while a cake does not usually have  crust or top. A cheesecake does have a crust which is made from crushed biscuits and not pastry.
