  1. a foal is a baby

  2. all horses are foals when they are born.

  3. filly is female

    colt is male

  4. Foal: baby still with its mom

Weanling: baby being weaned from its mom

Filly: female from 1 to 4 years old

Colt: male from 1 to 4 years old

    Mare: female 5 and older

    Stallion: male 5 and older

    Gelding: fixed male, any age

When they're babies, we don't really differentiate their gender...  a foal and weanling are gender neutral.  The website is telling you it's a filly so that you know that it's a girl.
