What's the difference between a hornet and a wasp?

i know a hornet is in the wasp category but i need a further explanation .plz

  1. A hornet is a type of wasp. It's a sub-category in the same way catfish are a type of fish.

    Wikipedia says that, "A wasp is any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is neither a bee nor ant."

    And, "The true hornets make up the genus Vespa, and are distinguished from other vespines by the width of the vertex (part of the head behind the eyes), which is proportionally larger in Vespa..."  

    Basically, wasps make up a big chunk of the suborder Apocrita and hornets make up a single genus within the family Vespinae which is within the suborder Apocrita.

    The explanation is a little complicated. I linked the Wikipedia pages I was looking at though.
