I think I have a female dwarf gourami, I think, its mostly red, and its long, string-like fins are white, I think the males are string fins are yellow and they're bodies are mostly red. Is this right?

  1. Nope.

The dorsal fin on the male runs the length of the body and is used to display. The female has a much smaller/shorter one.

Otherwise they look pretty much alike and colour doesn't come into it.
