I believe a novel generally refers to a story book. A one with a plot and characters.

As for a book, it can be on any topic. A comic book, a history book, a science book, etc.

A novel is a type of book - generally a fictional story of some kind.  Examples of recent novels include The Da Vinci Code, any of the Harry Potter series, and Life of Pi.

The term 'book' encompasses all types - not just novels, but biographies, self-help books, poetry books, cook books, atlases, The Bible (sometimes referred to as 'The Book,' or 'The Good Book'), and all manner of reference books (dictionaries, encyclopedias, how-to guides, tour books, etc.).
