What's the difference between a portable air conditioner and a free standing air cooler?

  1. An air cooler just uses water for cooling so it won't be as cold as a proper air conditioner and you have to keep topping up the water.  Both can be moved to different rooms.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you mean but if I understand you correctly, a portable air conditioner is the type that has to be mounted in the window, in order to work whereas a free standing air cooler justs sits in the room.  It is still vented outside though with a hose but you don't have the trouble of trying to install it.

    The free standing ones are about double the price too and I've heard that they're not as effective as the window mounted ones......
