What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

psychologist is someone who provides therapy etc to get you to find out why you re having problems you re having and guides you to find a solution yourself.

psychiatrist is someone who prescribes meds and diagnoses you.

A psychologist listens and talks back.

A psychiatrist listens and hands you medication.

I believe a psychiatrist is also technically a doctor, wheras psychologists aren't.

i remember it becaue pshycology is how the brain works and how ppl think or whatever, and that's what pshycologists go off of.

The psychologist cannot prescribe meds.  The psychologist does more counseling/psychotherapy.  The psychiatrist is a medical doctor.

A psychiatrist practices medicine and has graduated from medical school and can provide therapy, but usually in a restricted manner. They are more into the diagnostic and chemical aspects of the mind.

Psychologist have graduated with a PhD and do not practice medicine, and are typically more involved in therapy and conversations that bring to light problems needed to be addressed.

Both require advanced degrees and both help people.

A psychiatrist is a certified doctor that can prescribe medicine, and must go to medical school. A psychologist does not have to go to medical school, and cannot prescribe medicine. Psychiatrists usually have their own practices and work one on one with patients.
