They seem to be translated into the same word: "Freundin". How do I tell them apart?

  1. Freund is masculine and means any friend, male or female.

Freundin is feminine and means girlfriend.

Sie ist mein Freund means "She is my (platonic) friend."

Sie ist meine Freundin means "She is my girlfriend."

  2. yes freundin

girlfriend and girl friend is the same

  3. in the context (said by a male):

Eine Freundin (von mir) = girl friend (lit. a friend)

Meine Freundin = girlfriend (lit. my friend)

female can say both, meaning girl friend.

    (said by a female):

Eine Freund (von mir) = boy friend (lit. a friend)

Meine Freund = boyfriend (lit. my friend)

male can say both, meaning boy friend.

Homosexuals tend to say: "mein Partner (or Lebenspartner)", or make it different clear .

  4. You can tell by the context. If your talking about making out, its obviously not about a friend(or maybe) but just like in english you kinda have to elaborate.
