  1. a reason can be legitamate; and excuse is generally a psuedo-reason used as attempt to pass the blame.

  2. A reason is a question for some action created that is perhaps unusual to the asker.  An excuse is provided by someone being accused of wrongdoing.

  3. I never need excuses . I always have a reason for what I do.

  4. a reason is normally used as something that is legitamite and is unavoidable

an excuse is like a reason that was made up or is used to get out of something unwanted

  5. Negative connotation; an excuse has a negative flair to it, and the reason has an air of legitimacy to it--both actually mean the same things though.

For the word excuse to be considered, persons tend to use the term; 'legitimate excuse'--although the term excuse means excused.
