  1. A scholarship is typically given by a private entity and requires the recipient to meet some strict requirement both before and after they've received it.  For example, a merit scholarship might require that have a 3.0 GPA, and maintain it throughout their time in school.  A band scholarship might require that you actually play a specific instrument, and then subsequently in the band.  Scholarships may be canceled, reduced, taken back, or may even have to be repaid if the recipient doesn't continue to meet the scholarship's requirements.

A grant is given typically by some government agency or non-profit organization.  All you need do to receive one is apply and meet the qualifications.
