  1. My experience at Bluehost.com:

An add-on domain requires registering a domain name for it. It is installed as a subfolder of the account's 'public_html' folder. There is a file called ".htaccess" which allows you to redirect the add-on domain's name to the proper folder. It's not apparent to users that the domain is an add-on to another domain.

A subdomain is created as a subfolder of any domain's main folder. It is accessed by referring to "x*x.domainname.com". It does not require registering a domain name for it.

  2. An add-on domain is a domain address that points to a folder within the main web site.. It is not a redirect... It will look like this for example.. "theanswers.com"

a sub domain  for example... your main webssite is called "www.answer.com"

you put a sub domain on and it will look like this,  "media.answers.com" or "pics.answers.com"
