  1. They are both mean the same

    A dissertation (also called thesis or disquisition) is a document that presents the author's research and findings and is submitted in support of candidature for a degree or professional qualification. The word "thesis" comes from the Greek θέσις, meaning "position", and refers to an intellectual proposition. "Dissertation" comes from the Latin dissertātiō, meaning "discourse."


  2. It is not ignorant to ask. A thesis is shorter in length and the research is not nearly as long. They both are required in order to complete the degree.  

  3. In the UK:

    a dissertation is normally part of an undergraduate degree

    a thesis is normally part of a higher level degree, and contains a greater proportion of original research

  4. In the US: a thesis is done for a master's degree and a dissertation is done for the doctorate (Ph.D.)
