What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?

Just a simple qurestion...and a random one...I keep getting confused!

how you play it, violins are played under the chin, and fiddles are played in the crook of the arm..... but basically it's just two different names for the same instrument.

violins are fiddles. It is a country phrase.

a  violin is informally called a fiddle. they are the same instrument. the difference is that fiddling refers to a type of country music like bluegrass or cajun. the violin and fiddle are the same instrument but different music hope i helped :):):)

the same instrument playing classical music would be called a violin.

the same instrument playing country and western would be called a fiddle.

Classical Music, Violin... Country and Bluegrass, Fiddle... same instruments, different terminology for style of music being played on it. Some "fiddle" players do shave the bridge though, to where classical violinist wont.
