What's the difference between a whole house fan and the fan on my A/C?

I've heard great things about installing a whole house fan, but am confused as to the difference between the fan that is on my A/C already? I use it just like others describe how they use their whole house fan and it seems to keep the house pretty cool in the evenings and summer mornings, but I am wondering if a whole house fan would be better? I have a 1275 sq. ft single story home (built in '02).

  1. A whole house fan is an exhaust fan. It is usually installed in the attic, or in the ceiling in the center o the house and pulls air in through the windows and /or doors and exhausts it out the attic vents.  It works well in climates where AC is a border line requirement.
