  1. LCD is liquid crystal display,  its the same as a laptop monitor.

Plasma is a gas that fills the screen, they have a shelf life of about 10 years.  I think plasma is not being made anymore.  LCD is more expensive, but they say they are better and have a better picture.  I have a 42" panasonic plasma hdtv.  I've had it for 3 years now and I love it,  It looks great and works great.

  2. Short answer: In terms of picture quality, there is hardly any difference that is visible to the naked eye.

Long answer: LCD and Plasma TVs are different in terms of burn-in, thickness, contrast ratio, life span, weight, performance at high altitude, viewing angle, brightness etc. Check the source Diffen - http://diffen.com/difference/LCD_TV_vs_P... - they have given good details - both in a nicely summarized table and in more text for those who like details.

  3. Plasma and Lcd are both the top hdtv technologies at the moment and both deliver excellent performance, in their own distinctive ways...

plasma is a gas based technology and creates an onscreen image through phosphor excitement and creating colour with the combined gas which then displays colour onto each pixel, creating an onscreen image.

lcd is a transmissive technology which involves a backlight to shine through a flourescent colour panel which then passes through a secondary filtering panel and then onto the liquid crystal pixels to create the onscreen image.

Currently plasma is the better technology as it produces more natural colours, good contrast, deep dark scenes, fast motion and particularly good viewing angles, and this is a flaw where lcd falls short.

Lcd's however are very good when it comes to brightness and sharpness, and are capable of showing amazing clarity.

Many of lcd's shortcomings are getting better all the time and some new sets are comparable to plasma.

Panasonic is the best plasma company when it comes to good value combined with excellent performance.

Sony makes the best lcd's, being good on value and carrying on the trend of excellent quality and reliability, which sony is renowned for.

In terms of performance, Sony's lcd tv's are the best currently available.

    hope this information helps
