What's the difference between asphalt and diamonds?

I'm in an Organic Chemistry class and I know it has something to do with the structure of the carbon molecules... but I don't know how? and why?

  2. asphalt (or bitumen outside the US) is an organic liquid comprises many different organic compounds.

    diamond is an allotrope of carbon and is arranged in a tetrahedral unit structure (which can repeat ad infinitum)
