  1. I have always done my own.  I have fine hair which is a curse, but coloring not only gives me better color it also gives me better hair.  When I was young the boxed stuff was terrible for your hair but these days the formulas are greatly improved and that isn't true anymore, it actually conditions.            PS I use the cheap $3 a box Revlon and it works just as well and leaves my hair just as nice as the expensive stuff does- I know, I tried them all.

(I noticed the other people who answered say the salon treatments last longer which I didn't know.  But you know what - after thinking about it I have to color again when the roots start to show anyway so I'm thinking what difference would that make?

  2. salon hair color usually lasts longer and it is better quality and idk about every salon but the one i go to has conditioning stuff in there dye so it doesnt damage your hair as much

  3. From personal experience, I would go to the salon for color.  I have blonde hair and have tried it before and mine DID NOT turn out good!!  LOL  Going to the salon you'll know what you're getting.

  4. My friend owns her own salon and from what she has told me there is no difference, unless you are doing highlights, low lights, chunky styles you might as well do it from the box. All hair dyes will fade over time (red colors will fade faster). The one thing I recommend is buying your shampoo and conditioner at the salon they are much more concentrated, if you do use shampoo from the store don't use any pantene products more than once a month. this brand tends to build up on your hair and scalp.

  5. boxed hair color fades faster, but it is much cheaper. if you use a boxed color, then keep coloring it before it completely fades out. it will last longer. :]

  6. When you go to a salon your are having someone who has education and experience that will be doing your hair with color.  They can customize a color for you.  They know what developer to use, how to apply it thoroughly,  what shade to use, the correct timing, the best products etc.  When you use box color you are picking one color based on the way it looks on the box, which may not be the way it turns out.  Most people do not follow the instructions for home haircolor and they do not understand the color theory as it applies to hair.  So alot of times they end up with bad results and have to go to a professional anyway and spend more money to get it fixed.
