  1. a hurricane is an overpowered storm while a cyclone is like a vortex-spiraling wind

  2. What just hit Myanmar is no different than a hurricane that might hit North America.

The confusion comes about because "cyclone" means many different things:

In the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal it is the same type of storm that would be called a hurricane in North America.

In North America the term cyclone can be synonymous with "tornado."

Traditionally it can mean any strong and destructive windstorm.

Meteorologists use the term to refer to low pressure areas of any size with spiralling winds.

  3. Geographic location.  They are the same thing.

  4. they're the same thing.

Just depends on where you are and who and who you're talking to.
