  1. Fruits are derived from the flower of a plant and contain seeds. So, if it has seeds (even tiny ones) it is a fruit.

Vegetables are plant parts that we eat that are not fruits. So, broccoli is a vegetable because it is the flower buds, but tomatoes are fruits because they have seeds.

  2. Fruits are derived (means they come from or grow out of) the sexually REPRODUCTIVE parts of a plant:  the plant ovary swells with seeds when pollinated and provides attractive sugary outside (what we eat) in an attempt to attract animals that will help the seeds to travel and be scattered elsewhere.

Vegetables are plant parts that are purely "vegetative"- means they do not function in sexual reproduction of the plant.

These include stems, (celery), roots, (carrot, potato), and leaves (lettuce, spinach).
