  1. It is a complicating topic choosing between a plasma and a LCD tv. They are both competing technologies that give very similar results

  2. lcd (liquid crystal display) plasma is a state of matter they are both very very very very diffrent

  3. as the first person said, LCD uses liquid crystals...it works with little tiny pixels that are put in front of a reflector of some kind.

a plasma uses tiny cells that hold a gas mixture (neon and xenon) in between glass - these cells are turned into plasma that then gives off light.

Plasma tends to be the most expensive, but it is also supposed to have very vivid colors. There is a risk of burn-in on the screen.

LCDs tend to have better contrast ratios, they are in most cases less costly than a plasma, but there is a risk of having dead pixels.

You should also be aware of DLP's.  They are rear projection TV's (still flat screen) and are probably the "best bang for your buck".  The technology may be on the way out in the next 5 yrs or so....they seem to be moving more and more int he direction of only LCD and plasma...but still..you can get a great hdtv with great picture quality for less money.  This is an especially good option if you are looking for a large tv and you don't want to break the bank.  The downside is they are slightly bulkier and the picture quality is still slightly less than LCD or plasma (but not a monumental difference)

I personally recommend the Sharp Aquos line for LCD and the Samsung line for DLP...actually Samsung is good for everything....their TV's are great.  Sony is also known to be great, but they are more expensive (for what reason I do not know...I have never thought that the picture quality is necessarily worth the extra cash)
