What's the difference between lethargy and just sleeping?

Ever since I've had a dog, I've been told to watch him for lethargy. I am confused as to what pointing sleeping a lot becomes lethargy. My dog is over a year old and still sleeps many hours of the day. He does run, play and is healthy. I'm just wondering how to tell the difference between his sleeping and lethargy.

  1. When your dog's awake, how active is he. Does he run around a lot or seek attention or want you to play games with you? These are all normal dog traits. But if he just sits around and is very inactive then he is more than likely lethargic.

  2. If he is sleepy all the time - even after he wakes after a long sleep, then that is lethargy.  If he is waking up full of energy and ready to play, then he is normal.

  3. lethargy includes walking extremely slow.... like eeyore

    sleeping is just that... sleeping

  4. Dogs take short naps off & on, that's normal.  He would not be lethargic if while awake, he was running and playing.  Lethargic would mean he was awake, but not moving around, no energy, looking as if he were on a sedative.

  5. Lethargy can be a sign of illness. A lethargic dog is generally not interested in playing, being active or energetic. Basically a lethargic dog seems depressed. Along with lethargy you should also keep an eye out for disinterest in food, loose motions, over/under drinking.

Normally a healthy adult dog will sleep from between 14 - 18 hours a day. Larger breeds tend to sleep more as will very young or old dogs.
