What's the difference between man-made and natural satellites?

In what ways do satellites give information to us?

What would be the effects on today's societyof not having satellites?

Are there any disadvantages to the use of satellites?

  1. Different Satellites give us different information depending on whether they are natural or man made. Natural satellites give us information about the time and dates eg: how large the moon is and whether it is waxing or waning plus it’s position in the sky. Natural satellites also tell us if the tides are in or out, when they will be in or out, and when they were in or out. Man made satellites give information such as our location on Earth, how to get to a location, photos of places and people on Earth, pretty much whatever we tell them to do.

      Natural Satellites

    •They formed naturally

    •We perceive information from them

•We have no control over them

    •Naturally orbit a planet

•Cannot be used as a weapon

    •Influences nature eg waves etc

    •Has no life expectancy

    Man made satellites

•Humans made them and put them there

•They feed information directly to us

•We control the satellites and can choose the type of information given to us from them

•Go anywhere we choose to send them

•Can be intentionally used as a weapon by humans

    •Sends transmissions to Earth

•Has a limited and known life expectancy

  2. Without satellites we would need more surveillance planes such as the Blackbird. We would not have the great weather information and radar topographical maps and data on forests and minerals would have to be gathered much more slowly. We would need many more undersea cables for communication. We would not have satellite TV

Fast news would still be delivered by undersea cable

Note: Cell phones work from local UHF radio towers and not from satellites. Satellite phones work directly from satellites

  3. Man-made: Humans put them in orbit.

Natural: Humans did not put them there, they've occurred naturally somehow.

Man-made satellites give us global positioning, pictures for Google Earth, information on missile launch pad locations (ie: Cuban Missile Crisis)

Natural satellites give us information on what time of the month it is, whether the tides are in or out, whether an eclipse is about to happen.

If today's society did not have satellites, then we wouldn't have GPS, cell phones, certain forms of television (ie: DirecTV) , watching news happen in real time, halfway around the world, would not occur, governments would have to use more people to spy on other countries, and we wouldn't be able to map out the solar system.

Yes - heavy reliance on satellites means that if the satellite is destroyed somehow, it will take months, maybe years to replace what was lost and reestablish whatever was interrupted. Transmissions can be intercepted and used for other purposes, or even blocked, making communication with military forces or even your neighbor suddenly difficult.

  4. 1. Simple: Natural satellites are naturally created celestial bodies that orbit another celestial body. Artificial satellites are man made... like the TV satellites. The Moon is a natural satellite.

    2. Satellites give us information in a couple ways. Sometimes they take pictures of Earth, and give us geological data such as temperatures, weather, etc. They also reflect radio signals giving us television, and cell phone service.

    3. No cell phones, no internet, no cable TV, very few weather information, etc.

    4. One of the disadvantages is that they cost a lot of money, and don't last forever. When they die, they are left as space junk, and eventually the enter back into Earth, but usually burn up. If there is something going wrong, and there is a threat, they can shoot them down.

  5. Man-made satellites is regualated by man but natural satellites is not regulated by man but natural
