  1. Marketing is the process of the product or service life cycle, from inception to elimination

Sales is the way that consumers purchase the product or service

Advertising is the method that you use to inform potential clients about the product or service

  2. Marketing - telling the world ahout your product/solution/service/offering,how great it is, what value it delivers, how it will help differentiate your target customers wiht respect to their competition - all with an aim to generating demand for your offering in the form of "leads".

Sales - taking the leads generated through targeted marketing programs, and pushing them through a cycle of qualification, offer (commercial and technical terms), fine-tuning and closure (in the form of a purchase order, or some such artifact) that results in an order for your product/solution/service/offering. Note that Sales guys are a different breed from the Marketing folks, even though they commonly belong to a merged Sales & Marketing team in many organizations (across different industries)

Advertising is one of several mechanisms that you may choose to use, to tell the world about your offering. It is part of the marketing process that you roll out, with the aim of getting the word out - and you are expecting to generate interest and thereby leads for your offering, for Sales to follow up. Advertising can be done over various channels or media - print, visual (TV, movie theater adverts, etc.), audio (radio), etc.

  3. Marketing is how to get your product out there.

Advertising is actually getting your product out there

Sales is how many products will you need, how many have you sold and might need in the future.
