  1. As teh Ninja boy said technicly they are the same thing. Most hybred arts are a mixture of styles put together, and some are excellent, such as Kajukenbo  but most are done to make money and are not very effective.

MMA is basicly the same thing, only tailored to the individual. MMA is not just wahat you see in the UFC.

  2. There is a difference between cross training, hybrid martial arts, and mixed martial arts.

CROSS TRAINING - it's simply the act of practicing more than one martial art. Usually people do this to supplement the weak areas of their base style (ie: wrestler taking boxing). Though each art will give you something different, there are more effective combinations than others. For instance, cross training in Karate and Judo is more efficient than training in Karate and Tae Kwon Do -- in terms of becoming more well-rounded.

Why? Because a combination of Karate and Judo will give a practitioner skills in all 3 major ranges of combat (striking, clinch, ground). Practicing Karate and Tae Kwon Do will enhance the Karateka's arsenal of kicks, but he still won't have much (or any) clinching and ground skills.

Sometimes people will cross train and the create their own martial art, which is a culmination of the arts that they've practiced -- keeping what they find useful and discarding the rest. This called a...

HYBRID MARTIAL ARTS - martial arts that are comprised elements from different styles that the founder had practiced (ie: Jeet Kune Do). Some would argue that most existing traditional martial arts are hybrid arts.

Due to the wording, people often times mistake Hybrid Martial Arts for a sport called...

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS - a combat sport, in which players attempt to overcome one another using a combination of punches, kicks, knees, throws, takedowns, pins, chokeholds, and jointlocks.

Technically, MMA is not a style of martial arts, though it bears many resemblances. For instance, there are certain techniques and strategies that are distinct to the sport, which all practitioners are familiar with (ie: ground and pound). Despite this, someone can technically be a nixed martial artist without ever training. The only true criteria for being a mixed martial artist is having participated in an MMA bout. That fact is the only thing that blocks MMA from being a martial art, in a literal sense.

Also, it should be noted that all successful mixed martial artists cross train. It is essential to have competence in all 3 major ranges of unarmed fighting in order to compete in even the middle tiers of the sport. It is most common for fighters to cross train in Muay Thai, Wrestling, and JiuJitsu for standup, clinch, and ground ranges respectively. However, so long as each base is covered, any mixture of styles can potentially be successful.

PS Bunjikan dork, I've got a funny vid for you.

two complete novices to weapons fighting hold their own against Bujinkan Blackbelts.

Jason Chambers, the MMA fighter, completely tools his ninjer opponent in a brief unarmed scrimmage.

Meanwhile Bill Duff actually wins a round of weapons sparring.

Considering that they were 10 + degree blackbelts, that's pretty inexcusable.

But yes, you're right, MMA sucks -- since some random guy can train in it for a week and hold his own against an experience practitioner. Oh wait...

  3. for the most part hybrid martial arts is the mixture of two martial arts or sometimes even just redefining one and training in that particular skill.....mixed martial arts is the mixture of boxing, wrestling, jujitsu, kickboxing, muay thai, street fighting, krav maga, hapkido, judo, and taekwondo where the competitors do not necessarily know the same skill but compete against each other........also MMA is much more awesome....i should know...I've been doing it for almost ten years

  4. Mixed martial arts and hybrid martial arts are the same thing. They are synonymous in that they suck.
